What is shiatsu?

Shiatsu or "finger pressure" is a holistic bodywork method that uses the application of pressure to the body to re-balance energy flow. It has roots in the 5000 year old tradition of Traditional Chinese Medicine and works to restore a healthy balance of chi, or life energy, within energetic pathways in the body called meridians. Acupressure points called tsubos have particular influence on the organs and organ systems.

The shiatsu therapist works with their palms, thumbs, elbows, knees, and feet to apply appropriate pressure in a shiatsu treatment. The appropriate pressure depends on the state of health of the receiver and areas within the body of stagnation or deficiency. Balancing the chi in the body promotes healing, relaxation, and well-being.

Style of Shiatsu

We practice a style of shiatsu called Earth Shiatsu™. The perspectives of nature awareness, meditation, and martial arts are the basis of our practice. Earth Shiatsu therapists use direct and compassionate touch as well as the positive healing force of nature to promote healing.
